Doing well, Sarah. Thanks for your comment. Glad you liked the post.

To answer your question: I suggest that #5 and #4 be done each time your make a schedule as a basic rule. To some extent #3 as well but learning how to build a schedule around the critical path may take time. So the more you do it, the better you become. #2 and #1 comes only with experience. Just be cognizant of them.

Thanks,
Raj

Great post Raj,

I work very hard to write detailed schedules for big projects at CoLab, and these errors will be great to have in mind when the next one comes around. Do you suggest taking time each time each day to use these principles on much smaller scales? (i.e. one day at a time)

Hope you're doing well!

Good article. It deals exactly with what I am dealing with now. The project completion date is going to pass and there is still much work left to do. Bad thing is I had the gut feeling from the beginning that it could not be done in the 6th month timeline. Feeling really stupid right now. I said many times but guess I did not say it firmly enough. I tried putting in extra hours to make it happen. Now I am burned out and the project is still going to miss the deadline. This is just how it goes sometimes.

Thank you for this insightful review. You really seemed to pull back the curtain and really understand what was going on between the lines. Some people miss what it was about and get distracted by the streets of Harlem, but you really pushed on.

To have readers understand on that level is very rewarding.

This is EXACTLY what I try to cultivate with my clients - getting back to the realization that we are all born as not only creative but also creative leaders with the ability to solve problems and live our life in the spirit of adventure and sincere zest. Great point and so glad to see that you agree.

Christine, Thank you for your comment. I do identify with the definition of an extrovert but the difference b/w extroverts and introverts is debatable. I read your post about introverts and social media. Good post. But I believe that both our posts, even though very valid to us individually, may not apply to all extroverts and introverts. I think a lot of our behavior goes beyond the definitions and is a result of many more factors such as upbringing, exposure and influences. I am not an expert, its just a belief that is yet to be justified.

So about trusting social media, i trust some and some i dont... mainly because of my not-easily trusting, mostly skeptical point of view and an over analyzing mind. But I love socializing in person rather than online, hate being alone and get energized in the company of people, extrovertially (new word) speaking.

Keep in touch.

Very thoughtful post. You mentioned you're an extrovert. I'm curious -- what is your level of trust when it comes to social media?

Ironically, I've written on my own blog about how social media is great for introverts like myself, because it helps us be more social without the overstimulation of in-person meetings that usually causes us to shut down. You'd think introverts would be less "trusting" online, but I don't know if that's a rule. What do you think?

Try cloud foundry and I am sure you would start liking it.

Cloud Foundry is the industry’s first open Platform as a Service (PaaS). Cloud Foundry represents a new generation of application platform, architected specifically for cloud computing environments and delivered as a service from enterprise datacenters and public cloud service providers. Cloud Foundry is based upon on an open system architecture with the fundamental tenets of friction free development.

www.CloudFoundry.com is a full function public developer cloud PaaS service, operated by VMware, enabling developers to access Cloud Foundry and providing a test bed for new services and operational optimization of the software.

SXJ, I was hoping to hear from you. Thanks for your thoughtful and informative comment.

I agree, the future is in the clouds. As you pointed out, many of our basic online needs are or will surely be moving to the clouds. It is definitely a cheaper option for companies to host and implement their services, and a more reliable way (i consider last weeks Amazon incident a rarity) to be able to access data anywhere easily.

My post is more about the trust factor from a security standpoint. No cloud based service that I have reviewed really talks about security, maybe for obvious reasons that it is a big unknown, yet that's the biggest worry in the end-user minds (provided they take the time to think about it)... so my post is a call to action to ask everyone to find out more about where we are headed and be aware, be conscious of what we are using the cloud for, and prepare for the consequences that may arise due to it.

A good place to start would be to ask our banks if and what they are using the cloud for with our financial data. That is a great start to let institutions and companies know what "we care".

Thanks again SXJ, as always.

Do you trust your official email (which uses Microsoft exchange) to store emails - that is also on cloud (SaaS). There are whole bunch of things w.r.t cloud and a couple of important things are PaaS and IaaS. Most of the banks are going towards cloud and are following not the SaaS model straightaway but taking one step at a time from Infrastructure as a service solution to Platform as a service mode. With PaaS and IaaS you need to work towards making your own private cloud and I don't see any reason in another couple of years why a company need any physical and expensive IT team to maintain physical IT infrastructure which generally get's obsolete (configuration wise) in no time. The mantra is to go the cloud way and only then you will get rains of profit ?

Great post. This could be a rather painful post to read for those of us with short fuses. Although I have to say that my "fuse" has gotten significantly longer since moving up here from Florida (living in the country has helped a bit as well).
I have been that manager that has lost it and exploded right there in front of my team. The main issue that I have with apologizing is that, if I have to, I've done something that I know was wrong. I don't mind admitting that I was wrong, but I HATE being wrong. One thing that leads to more respect from your team is being able to admit that you were wrong and explaining where things went wrong.
Be a man (unless you're a woman) and own up to your short-comings. It sounds quite simple, but a quick self-evaluation is one of the most difficult exercises to complete.

Interesting article. As our society becomes more and more mobile, this will become familiar and more comfortable. Security is always a factor, but easy access and convenience will force us to make difficult decisions.

As for me and my lifestyle, I love the cloud.

Wouldn't it be an interesting turn of events if the quality of a manager could be "googled?" Turns out that you can.

I think that employee discussions and potentially rating manager performance publicly is happening right now and will probably greatly increase. The power of social media requires a whole new level of corporate transparency and I think that means at a manager level as well.

Imagine what would happen if each manager was held accountable to that degree. So long to inappropriate interviews, aversion to dealing with unpleasant conflict, ineptness and many other issues.

People already talk about their manager's performance. It's just to what degree they will make it available to the public. It could be that it's only a matter of time before this will be a daily reality....

Thanks for your comment, Deepak. This post barely skims the surface of the DISC model. Guy Harris is an expert and he has a lot of information about it on his site. Here is a link to give you a more details overview: Click here to read more about DISC

I feel it is a powerful tool and it is definitely something to dive deeper into.

Thanks for the mention, Raj. Great to see the entire post come together. The idea that discipline is a state of mind resonates with me. We often think of it as a series of actions we take and tools to use, but all of this is really for form habits that enable us to achieve our best selves.

I've tried and failed at many "systems" over the years, including GTD. But I've done best when I selected the elements of those systems that worked well for me and kept me moving. So, maybe you could say there is also discipline in becoming disciplined. :-)

But I’ve done best when I selected the elements of those systems that worked well for me and kept me moving. So, maybe you could say there is also discipline in becoming disciplined.

In sync with your thoughts..especially when you put it saying "discipline is a state of mind".

I believe nobody can force discipline into others and it is something one builds for self.

Raj,

Thanks for the mention in your article here my friend. That was a fun day with David Allen and I sharing the stage in Nashville. You said something here that sparked my curiosity.

Is self-discipline the same as hard work? I'm asking honestly. In fact I might write a blog about it because I think the two are different (I'll have to sit on it a bit though). As you know, I define self-discipline as the ability to do things you don't want to do.

I know people who work hard at things but they still can't get themselves to do the things they know they should do in order to get to the next level.

Thanks for the post and getting my wheels turning.

See you in the stairwell,
Rory

I agree. There is a saying in my native tounge 'only crying babies get milk'. I have cried many times and I have received rewards as a result. At one point, as I realized that I was defying my own principles that the proof of a job well done is in the results and I don't need to justify it, I stopped asking and they stopped giving. We all long for recognition and without it we drift away into a black hole or a new light.

The key to technology specialists embracing peopleology is to socialize, be open, practice the art of giving and accepting, building trust and sharing. Geeks can tend to remain in their own space, never get out of their shell and tend to relate more to other geeks or a closed circle. Practicing peopleology means to touch base with your human side at a work environment.

What bothers me about all of this is you can be a loyal customer for years but never get special treatment unless and until you ask and leave or threaten to. All of a sudden I am more valuable to the service provider. It personally makes me feel like I've been taken advantage of until that time. I'd much rather hear them say "No, as a long time customer we are already giving you the best rates available".

“I help people in technology with peopleology, so that at the end of the day technologists are just as comfortable and successful in a room full of people as they are in a room full of computers.”

Now that is a tall order! It is also really important work. Wondering what you think is the key to a technology professional truly embracing peopleology as essential to their jobs.

Nice post, Raj! This was an interesting way to take a look at BarCamp. You're absolutely right - people really gave of themselves to make BarCamp meaningful for everyone in attendance. A lot of work went into making it a success!

Thanks for the roundup of other BarCamp posts - very useful. And, thanks for the shout out as well! I appreciate it.

I learned this from watching champion toastmasters and other great speakers: To engage the audience, I like to ask poignant questions, tell them something very personal, something that they can relate to and then build your topic around those ideas. You may not always find the connection between the personal stuff you share and the topic you are talking about, but it helps bring them in anyway.

I've travelled for 4 years now to learn that lesson about the 5 people... and now I am surrounded by people whom I inspire, and whom inspire me. We all share the mutual goal of becoming the best us we can be. This leaves me fairly happy, stress free, supported, and inspired. It's hard to fire those who bring us down, but after a while, it becomes easy to sniff them out, and to fire 'em.

Raj:

I love Audible and was presented a slightly different options several months back...put the account on hold or get 2 credits free. They proved they wanted my business and valued me as a customer with their give and take.

Biggest rub against customer service orgs...I get it, we are in a technical world and IVRs are common place, but why are you asking me to enter my account info, last 4 of the social, address, first born's last 4 of social and then when the agent gets on the line asks it all over again!!!??

Verizon is a disaster (half my family works there by the way)...I bought a new phone in January and by February it was broken. I drove 40 minutes to the store and got another one, which after 24 hrs I realized not all the features were working. Called this time and they sent me another...the screen was cracked, they sent another. 4 phones in about 1 month. 3 weeks ago, the phone went on the fritz and they sent me another...the touch screen on this (the 5th) phone is not working. Any credits, upgrades, sorries...no! When I mention I will go to another provider, they say "sure sir. We respect your opinion and if you want to pay your $200+ fee to cancel service early, then we can do that right now".

Long story...sorry. In the end, work with me and show that you care about me as a customer and partner in this service. Audible showed they care and WANTED me as the customer, they didn't hold a fee over my head as some ransom for my business. I have been a Verizon customer for about 8 years and looking around for my next provider.

Hello Raj,
I really appreciate this post, for busy people like me, it is tough to deal with projects, solutions, deadlines and cost. But you just remind me of a reality check, that once and foremost we have to manage our life fruitfully and that the "expiration date" is unpredictable we better make life worth living.

Raj:

Great post and a difficult reality. I think two things can happen when folks read this. 1) It doesn't apply to me attitude kicks in or 2) They could take this too far down the path of negativity.

This is an honest question and reality we all need to review...are the praises coming from folks that really know what Project Management is? Does it matter if 1 or 2 folks praise you and the project was actually off target...late, over budget, too many concessions made, etc.

Kudos are always good, but we need to make sure we are providing value to our employee. We need to understand our organizations, the industry, and what 6 mos, 1yr, and 5yrs have in-store for us. I saw a lot of good people let go in early 2009 and it all came down to business and timing. Many of them were shocked and caught of guard.

Be honest, know your organizations strategy and where you fit in, know the industry and changes you need to stay on top of, and manage your career.

I saw a lot of good people let go in early 2009 and it all came down to business and timing. Many of them were shocked and caught of guard.

Be honest, know your organizations strategy and where you fit in, know the industry and changes you need to stay on top of, and manage your career.

It is really true, the world starts to compete with time, everyone seems to be meeting up deadline, going for a quota, dealing with productivity, people are too busy that they forget to live a good life.

I work for @task and we recently introduced a new social project management platform called @task Stream. The idea is to improve the communication between project teams, project managers, and sponsors. You can see what I'm talking about by going to http://www.attask.com/stream. I'm interested to hear if you think that having social media tools inside of a project management software will help improve communication.

Raj, good post! I really enjoyed the closing and think you nailed it!

"Communication is crucial in project management. It is 90% of what we do in our leadership roles. Until we work on our body language basics, we are only half as good as we think we are."

Thanks for the post!
