We are growing as an organization and the evidence is all around us. We step into the new year with a sense of accomplishment – the accomplishment we feel due to the success stories that resulted in the company’s growth; our growth.
Let’s stop and think for a moment and let us ask ourselves – Why are we successful? Is it because we have a competent sales team able to rope in a lot of business? Is it because we have effective managers able to use their skills and experience to lead their projects to victory? Yes, it is BUT that alone is not enough. They set the stage for success but they are NOT the only heroes. Each team member who they empower to win with confidence, initiative and skill – is a hero. Together they made it a success story.
I was inspired to write about this after reading the article How Leaders Build Winning Streaks in which the author says and I quote:
“Leaders find the best people they can, ensure their preparation, put them in the right positions, and give them a game plan. After that, winning is up to the players on the field. It is their leadership that matters. The actions of many leaders seizing the moment create the margin of victory.”
In June of ’07 I received the ‘Rising Star’ award. I did not expect it and I was not prepared for it. So, I did not have a ready speech or a thank you note. I ran up to the stage, received the award, shared a photo frame with the President, smiled and returned to my seat. As I sat down, I realized that I received the award due the success stories I created in the organization. Then, I felt guilty. This was not my success alone. I was successful because of the team that supported me, the team I trusted, who in turn put faith in my leadership; whose commitment and hard work made it a success. I felt guity because I realized I did not thank my team. So, I take this opportunity to thank my team members for taking initiatives, for being accountable, for being the real heroes – the rising stars I represent.
